Helping People…Near AND FAR
Serving the community is a foundation of our Strategic Roadmap. For HSS, community has a far reaching definition and includes mission critical humanitarian efforts.
Last week, Dr. Swetha Pakala, one of our anesthesiologists, was awarded The Leon Root, MD, Community Service Award at a special ceremony. I’ve talked about this award and Dr. Pakala’s work here in a previous blog, but as a reminder, she was recognized for her work as the founder and leader of the Global Health Initiative (GHI). GHI has worked in Ghana, Vietnam, Uganda and India to educate providers and facilitate sustainable growth and health infrastructure within these communities. Dr. Pakala serves as a role model for compassion and service and has a passion for helping others in the HSS community and beyond.
I am pleased to share with you that HSS will be supporting GHI in 2020 through a newly founded program – the Humanitarian Initiatives Program at HSS. This program aims to improve musculoskeletal care in limited-resource settings in the United States and abroad, with an emphasis on sustainable education and research. Every year, the Humanitarian Initiatives Program will support select initiatives that promote sustainable knowledge transfer in the area of musculoskeletal health. Bi-annual service trips will occur, and eligible HSS family members who apply and are selected to participate will be able to take time off with pay to attend.
I am excited about this initiative and continuing to support new ways in which HSS can share our knowledge and expertise with those who are in need of advanced musculoskeletal care.
