It is hard to believe in 43 days we will enter the year 2020. I am pretty sure that, regardless of our age, this seems like a year out of the future, yet it is right around the corner. I would like to share just three thoughts with you as we approach the end of 2019:
1- This past Saturday, the HSS Pediatric Council hosted the All-Star Family Benefit in support of the Lerner Children’s Pavilion. There were hundreds of people in attendance, many with their children or grandchildren, enjoying the time they were spending together, while also supporting HSS and the care we provide to our youngest patients. The event was amazing and the funds raised were extraordinary (more than $1M), but to see our mission and values in action was inspiring. It also made me remember how important our children are. Whether they be our own children, our friends’ children or our patients…they are our future and it is special to be part of an organization that provides world-class healthcare to so many of them.
2 – 2019 was a successful year by any measure. We helped people get back to what they need and love to do better than any place in the world, and we did that thousands of times…over and over again. This is our most important measure of success. Sure there are many other things I could list – we are financially strong, we opened new sites of care, we received many accolades, I could go on – but we helped people in an extraordinary way that made 2019 most special.
3 – The world is changing and it is changing fast. The healthcare industry is changing and it is changing fast. I have already shared with you why it’s changing, how it’s changing and the opportunity we have to be a leader of this change. Our Strategic Roadmap to 2025 provides the blueprint for the journey we need to be on. It outlines the capabilities we need to develop to travel on this journey, it highlights the four strategic priorities we need to relentlessly focus on and be successful with and it shows how we will measure our success along this ride we are taking. Of course the road we will be traveling is our foundation, and without that we could not go anywhere. As we end 2019, please take a look at the Roadmap and spend a few minutes thinking about each section and your role in helping us continue to move along our journey. Of course there will be more blogs, much more activity and more accomplishments over the course of the next 43 days as we will take care of thousands more patients, consistent with our purpose (remember, our purpose is to help people get back to what they need and love to do better than any place in the world) before we see the year 2020!
