Welcome 2020
Here we go!
I hope everyone had a very happy holiday and New Year. As we have now turned the calendar to the ‘20s, we are also progressing on our Roadmap to 2025 – Better, Knowledge and Scale. I hope you all received the letter I sent to your homes over the holiday. While we are extremely proud of what we accomplished in the past months and years, I am even more excited about the opportunities in our future. And our future begins today.
I was thinking about what to focus on in my first message.
I could easily talk about Better: our commitment to quality, our patient experience, the value we provide to all who participate in paying for the care we provide.
I could easily talk about the Knowledge: from taking care of more patients with Musculoskeletal conditions than any place in the world or the knowledge we have and are creating through our Institutes – Research, Education, Value and Innovation.
I could easily talk about the Scale we are achieving: our geographic expansions, our partnerships, and the launching of HSS Health.
Rather than those topics, let’s start the year by remembering our Purpose, our Values, and our Culture. All of these provide the bedrock that allows us to earn our reputation each and everyday.
Our Purpose is to help people get back to what they need and love to do better than anyplace else in the world. Our Purpose is pretty straightforward, understandable, inspirational, and achievable. Keep in mind what we have accomplished is in our past. What we need to accomplish, including achieving our Purpose, is a present-day responsibility. And one I have no doubt about our ability to achieve.
One of the key ways we will achieve this is by being true to our Values and our Culture. I always read and think about both. Take a minute to read and think about our Values and how each of us has the responsibility to bring them to life:
Excellence. We set and continually raise the bar on all that we do.
Integrity. We take pride in maintaining the highest levels of personal and professional conduct.
Teamwork. We participate fully as members of our team, respecting, supporting, and empowering one another.
Creativity. We support an environment that fosters new ideas and new approaches in everything we do.
Passion. We bring energy, commitment, and enthusiasm to our work every day.
And finally, the secret sauce that provides the fuel to everything above: our Culture. There are so many ways to describe this, including living our Values. The other way I will still describe this in 2020 is ‘Leadership By All.’ Everyone is a leader regardless of our role. We are a leader of ourselves, waking up every day committed to giving 110% as an individual and as a member of a team. We are leaders of our commitment to excellence and settling for nothing less. We are leaders of knowing our Roadmap to 2025 and our role in each of its elements. And we are leaders of creating a work environment that allows all of us to be the very best.
2020, here we come!
