Spreading Our Care and Knowledge

As HSS continues to expand and grow, we are always looking for new ways to provide patients with convenient access to our world-class care, as well as our extensive knowledge and expertise. Today I want to share with you two new ways we are doing this.

The first example is the recently opened HSS Ortho Injury Care. Located at 1233 2nd Ave. in Manhattan (in the same building as the HSS ASC of Manhattan), this new location offers same-day or next-day evaluations and care for patients with sprains, strains and possible fractures. Services available here include X-ray imaging, medical diagnosis, care and nonsurgical management of musculoskeletal injuries, as well as recent onset, acute joint pain.

This type of service is new for HSS, as it’s the first time we are giving patients the opportunity to book a same-day or next-day appointment online. Typically when a patient needs quick care like this they go to an urgent care facility or even the emergency room, but they now have the option to come to HSS – a place where they know they will get the best care possible. This is an exciting new venture for us, and an important new offering for HSS. As we continue on our journey, it is also something that will be scaled to other HSS locations. Stay tuned…

The second example is something called the Healthy Sport Index. For those of you not familiar with this project, let me give you some background. HSS partnered on this with the Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program. The Aspen Institute is an organization that gathers diverse thought leaders, creatives, scholars and members of the public to address some of the world’s most complex problems. Their Sports & Society Program convenes leaders, fosters dialogue and inspires solutions that help sport serve the public interest, with a focus on the development of healthy children and communities.

The Healthy Sport Index is the nation’s first-ever tool that assesses the benefits and risks of participating in the most popular sports for high school students, based on data and expert insights collected over two years. Dr. James Kinderknecht and Joe Janosky, Director of Sports Safety, were part of a group of leading medical and sports health experts who oversaw the development of this tool, including methodology and scoring.

This is an example of how we are sharing our knowledge and expertise in order to help people, which is an important step on our journey. I recently spoke with Tom Farrey, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Sports & Society Program, about this new tool, and excerpts of our conversation can be found here. I encourage you to read it to learn more about the Healthy Sport Index and its importance and impact on the field.

It would be wonderful for HSS to provide a health fair here at the Westchester facility where doctors can explain using stuffed animals how procedures are done. We could expand this to include our rehab capabilities, proper diet and health needs for the entire range of patients HSS provides services for. HSS has so much to offer the communities we serve, I want as many people as possible to know just how awesome we are.
