Sharing Our Growth Strategy

As we enter 2019, our Roadmap is in full swing. We are traveling on our journey and continuing to get better by focusing on many different priorities. One of these is growth, which, as I’ve mentioned before, is something we can only do because of our ‘better.’

I was recently interviewed by the Wall Street Journal to talk about our strategy for growth and our plans to bring the world-class care that is synonymous with HSS closer to where people live and work.

I invite you to read the full article below.

Hospitals See Opportunity in Bringing Care Facilities to Patients

Hospital for Special Surgery’s strategy is to multiply; CEO says ‘there’s more demand because people are more active’

For most hospital systems, growth comes through mergers or an acquisition. But when there isn’t another system to acquire, one answer is to multiply.

Hospital for Special Surgery, the oldest orthopedic hospital in the U.S., is multiplying rapidly. In the coming year, it will open two locations on Manhattan’s West Side, including a sports-medicine focused office in Hudson Yards and a larger outpatient facility in the Columbus Circle area. In addition, outposts and collaborations are in development for locations in Midtown Manhattan, the New York City borough of Brooklyn, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Aspen, Colo.

The expansion strategy is designed to deliver care closer to where people live and work, said Louis A. Shapiro, president and chief executive for Hospital for Special Surgery.

“Our strategy for our growth stems from our ability to develop the HSS model and extend our reach and impact,” said Mr. Shapiro. Overall, he said, “there’s more demand because people are more active.”

The growing need in care for knees, hips, shoulders and backs comes as the U.S. population ages and as health, wellness and fitness become more central to all populations. In addition, hospital systems are also looking to broaden name recognition and grow their patient population, both regionally and across the U.S.

In South Florida, for example, Mr. Shapiro said the new facility will attract patients from South America and across the South. New York’s Mount Sinai Health System and NYU Langone Medical Center already recently opened facilities in South Florida. Miami Cancer Institute joined the affiliate program of Memorial Sloan Kettering in 2017.

In Colorado, Hospital for Special Surgery is in a partnership with Aspen Valley Hospital where they will co-manage an orthopedics practice.

For the Hudson Yards location, the new 15,000-square-foot facility will primarily serve people who live or work at Hudson Yards and receive health services through partnerships the hospital has directly with employers. The Hudson Yards development sits on 28 acres of Manhattan’s West Side, and includes luxury residences, office towers, restaurants, an arts center and high-end shopping.

The outpatient office will open in 2019 and be housed in a building with an Equinox Fitness Club and the first-ever Equinox Hotel.

The West Side facility, on 58th Street and 10th Avenue, will have operating rooms, physician and advanced rehabilitation services and advanced diagnostics. It will open in the spring. Patients who live on the West Side of Manhattan will go there, said Mr. Shapiro, but it will also serve as a base for people who travel from across the U.S.

Mr. Shapiro said that only 6% of patients who visit the primary Upper East Side Hospital for Special Surgery campus come from the immediate neighborhood. Some 94% of patients who are seen by the hospital drive in or fly to the hospital, he said.
