Recognizing Compassionate Care

There are many ways we recognize HSS family members across the organization – from Employee of the Month to the DAISY Award and other departmental awards and more. Last week, we held a ceremony for one of my favorite recognitions of the year, the Wholeness of Life Award.

For those of you not familiar with the award, it is given out in partnership with the HealthCare Chaplaincy Network to an individual who is recognized for his or her years of providing compassionate care for patients and the dedication to promoting a balance of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. It is nearly impossible for the winner to be selected each year because there are so many deserving of it, but I am pleased to say that this year’s award went to JeMe Cioppa-Mosca, Senior Vice President of Rehabilitation. I would like to take some time to talk a little bit about JeMe and also about why this award is so important to HSS.

JeMe is the 32nd recipient of the Wholeness of Life Award at HSS, and she joins a list of very deserving and distinguished individuals who have won over the years. During her long career at HSS, JeMe has lived up to our values of excellence, passion, integrity, creativity and teamwork. She is energetic, committed, persistent and, above all, caring. Her long list of accomplishments has contributed to making HSS better and more accessible to our patients.

This award is probably the most coveted an individual can get, because what is more important than caring for the whole person in body, mind and spirit? This is how we should all approach everything we do here at HSS. Patients are at the center of all we do, so we should always keep this notion top of mind. It doesn’t matter if we are directly providing care to patients or supporting one of our many other functions behind the scenes; everything we do ladders up to patient care.

And, of course, this award is also a prime example of Leadership By All. JeMe, you have shown great leadership in the way you approach your role, serving as a mentor and an inspiration to all. It is so important that we approach our individual roles with this sense of compassion and dedication because it is what sets us apart from other organizations and allows us to succeed.

So, on behalf of the entire HSS family, congratulations JeMe! And, as always, thank you to every single HSS family member for all that you do, day in and day out.
